Centre for Orang Asli Concerns (COAC)

| ||||||||||||
The Center for Orang Asli Concerns (COAC) was established in 1989 to advance the cause of the Orang Asli especially in the greater dissemination of Orang Asli news and views, assisting in court cases involving Orang Asli rights, or in developing arguments for lobbying and advocacy work. COAC also facilitates Orang Asli initiatives at self-development and in defense of their rights, and supports those who want to promote such initiatives.
| ||
Volunteer Programme On-Site: COAC is mainly involved in advocacy work for the Orang Asli. At the moment there is only one active (land rights) case that has started its hearing process. There may be legal work that needs to be done for other potential court cases involving Orang Asli land or advocacy issues. We are also active in capacity-building for the Orang Asli, including in the use of social media and technology for young Orang Asli in the villages. This year, we will continue to focus on developing our community learning centers (CLCs) and the related economic-upliftment of communities. There will also be the usual village visits and other village-level programmes that are conducted from time to time. For example, the annual national-level World Indigenous Peoples Day Celebrations (Perayaan Hari Orang Asal SeDunia, PHOAS) is scheduled to be held in Sabah this August. This event organised by the Indigenous Peoples Network of Malaysia (JOAS), of which we are an associate member, and as such will be involved in mobilising and preparing the Orang Asli participants from Semenanjung Malaysia. Apart from the above, there is also some office work such as documenting, filing or scanning of archival materials and film. And the conversions of these materials into practical or informative social media material. Most importantly, interns and volunteers will be required to work with other colleagues and with members of the Orang Asli community on a variety of tasks and assignments. Online: Online work includes updating of the COAC website. Producing short video clips on Orang Asli matters. |

Danau Girang Field Centre is a collaborative research and training facility managed by the Sabah Wildlife Department and Cardiff University. It is situated in Lot 6 of the Lower Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary in Sabah, Malaysia. Our research aims to help mitigate the loss of Asian biodiversity by understanding the effects of habitat fragmentation on the ecosystem, while encouraging in-situ conservation and engaging with NGOs, stakeholders and policy makers alike. We offer a variety of ways to study, welcoming PhD, MRes and MSc students from all over the world, provided that their research falls under our general theme. DGFC also offers facilities for field courses from overseas and within the Asia-Pacific region, including Malaysia. We are open to volunteers and to research collaborations with scientists worldwide.
| ||
Volunteer Programme On-Site: Volunteers are expected to collaborate in the daily activities of the field centre, which include but are not limited to: assisting in the field work of different projects (camera trapping, forest restoration, habitat assessments and surveys, wildlife tracking using VHF, among others), trail maintenance, botanic plots maintenance, river cleaning, helping with visitors and field courses, processing camera trap pictures, preparing equipment for field work and cleaning and storing the equipment after use. All the activities are evenly distributed between the volunteers on a daily basis, and everyone is expected to collaborate in the different activities. Procedures that require animal handling (collaring, tagging or sampling) may need the assistance of volunteers, but the decision of including them will be made by the project leaders in each situation. Water Watch Penang (WWP) is a non-profit organisation founded in November 1997 as part of the Sustainable Penang Initiative under the auspices of the Socio-economic & Environmental Research Institute (SERI) of Penang. WWP aims to promote study, awareness, knowledge, conservation, protection and the practice of a water saving and climate resilient society towards the sustainable development of water resources in accordance with the aspirations of several Sustainable Development Goals.
WWP teaches parents who play a vital role as “water managers” at home and in the work place. Parents manage the family’s water budget and educate their children about water saving. WWP promotes water demand management (WDM) to ensure that water resources are not depleted but remain sustainable. Via WDM, the amount of water saved nationally is significant and WDM can lead to saving mega-water projects for future generations. Through domestic water audit (DWA), a form of WDM, water recycling and saving techniques become key strategies in addressing water scarcity and other water problems in Malaysia. WWP also work with government and water service providers in reducing high rates of non-revenue water, upgrading water treatment plants, increasing awareness, public education and other important water related issues. The ultimate objective of WWP is to create a ‘Water Saving Society’ in Malaysia.
