The Award is open to all young people residing in Malaysia between the ages of 16 - 25.

All participants are required to volunteer at at least one partner organisation over a set period of 3 months (July - September 2019). All participants are required to be in one or more service program (volunteer) over a set period of time limit of 3 months. It is up to the participants to decide which level you would like to take on, based on your time availability during the volunteering period of July - September 2019.

As a participant, you will:
  • Dedicate your time to developing environmental and community action projects in relation to the Central Forest Spine (CFS)
  • Set your own goals and record your progress throughout the voluntary period
  • Make a positive impact in the lives of others through voluntary service
  • Learn valuable practical and social skills for career development
  • Connect with other participants of this Award
  • Share your experience with friends, family, the public or create your own service learning campaigns

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) Focus Area:

Program Type:
Volunteers will be involved in daily operations at BSBCC, namely animal husbandry such as feeding, cage cleaning and enrichments making for the bears. Other roles would include environmental education and blogging.

Sustainable Living (Public Outreach, Youth and Volunteerism, Community Development, Restoration & Rehabilitation and Conservation)

Program Type:
  • Tree Planting: Volunteers will assist in planting trees and making mudballs in a half day event.
  • River Cleanup: Volunteers will assist in collecting waste, segregating and weighing the waste collected.
  • Public Engagements: Volunteers will assist in the activities that we have planned for the day which may vary based on the event’s needs.

Fuze Ecoteer Focus Area:
Outdoor adventure programmes with conservation and socio-empowerment

Program Type:
Trek for Conservation in the Rainforest next to Taman Negara. Get involved with the projects anti-poaching patrols in the Sungai Yu wildlife corridor which connects the Taman Negara to the Titiwangsa range. Help our team track clues of human activities in the forest to reduce poaching, a very important cause for Malaysian wildlife.

Volunteer with sea turtles on Malaysia’s breathtaking Perhentian islands. Help us protect Green sea turtle nesting sites, as well as identifying and tracking their movements with snorkel surveys whilst soaking up the beautiful scenery and culture the Perhentian’s have to offer.

Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS) Focus Area:

Program Type:
The ‘Taste of IDEAS’ programme is for volunteers who are not able to commit to a minimum of 3 months, but would like to learn more about the work we do at IDEAS and are willing to do more leg work. Younger applicants such as high school leavers are encouraged to apply.

Malaysian Primatological Society Focus Area:

Facilitating our outreach programs in schools. For this particular program, volunteers will help us to start up our Eco-Bricks Project in Langkawi.

Persatuan Rimba Komuniti Kota Damansara, Selangor (KDCF Society) Focus Area:
Community-based urban forest management with a focus on sustainable trail maintenance for education, recreations and community outreach.

  • Environmental education and interpretation.
  • Public awareness and outreach through social media and other communications.
  • Assistance with installing visitor infrastructure, such as trail rest stops and picnic areas, placing additional directional signage.

Project GreenSmiths Focus Area:
Creating sustainable solutions (project-based), Wildlife conservation

Location:
Ulu Muda Forest Reserve, Kedah

Program Type:
A lot of the time in the forest will be spent working on the project set for the expedition at Earthlodge, but there will also be time for activities such as river cruising, visiting salt licks and the hot spring, tubing down river, trekking to the caves and optional camping.

Tropical Rainforest Conservation and Research Centre Focus Area:
  • Rescue of endangered, rare, and threatened (ERT) Malaysian tree species through seed collection, conservation nurseries, and living collections that will ensure the availability of a viable and reliable seedstock for the long run.
  • Developing economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable landscape solutions through forest landscape restoration (FLR) and other land use models.

  • Tropical Rainforest Living Collection Banun (TRLC Banun) in Gerik, Perak
  • Tropical Rainforest Living Collection Merisuli (TRLC Merisuli) in Lahad Datu, Sabah
Program Type:
  • Seed Collection and Processing: Volunteers can accompany TRCRC field teams and trained forestry professionals to collect and process seeds from ERT tree species.
  • Nursery Operations: Volunteers can help with activities in TRCRC’s on-site nursery. Tasks may include mixing soil, peeling and processing seeds, and germinating seeds in seed beds. Volunteers may also help transplant seedlings from small to large polybags to facilitate healthy seedling growth.
  • Forest Restoration & Tree Planting: Volunteers can help with forest restoration activities, including tree planting and helping maintain seedlings that have already been planted.

In the application form, participants will be asked to rank their top 5 preferred organisations to work with based on the list of organisations given. The Award Committee will the take these preferences into account when assigning participants to each Organisation.
